We continue with Sonhoras’ 2026 programming, focused on bringing to the city some of the most current voices from the European sound poetry scene. This March we are visited from Paris by a poet with whom Sonhoras has a close connection, Joachim Montessuis…
Joachim Montessuis has been contextualizing his vocal, poetic, and visual interventions since the 1990s. He has run the experimental sound art and poetry label Erratum Musical since 1993 and, together with Sonhoras, co-directs the VOXXX series dedicated to vocal art and poetry. He is also co-founder of the OPEN laboratory at the Haute École des Arts du Rhin (HEAR) in Strasbourg.
He graduated from the Regional School of Fine Arts in Besançon (ERBA, DNSEP, 1996). He took a close interest in sound poetry and began working with the voice spontaneously in early 1993 using a computer and the Pro Tools sound editing system newly purchased by ERBA. He then created sound installations and has since mainly presented concerts/performances that mix noisy electronics and poetry. He later co-founded the association Erratum with Yvan Étienne and Michel Giroud in 1994.
He subsequently met numerous artists (David Larcher, Gianni Toti, Francisco Ruiz de Infante, Eléonore Hellio…) during regular residencies at the Centre international de création vidéo Pierre Schaeffer in Montbéliard between 1994 and 1998. There he discovered the Internet in 1995, a development that accelerated his networked work.
Joachim Montessuis has been developing an open, contextual practice around, among other things, voice, continuous sound, noise, and resonance for more than 20 years.
